BUSINESS ENERGY ADVICE SERVICE

Could the BEAS Grant Help Towards Your Next Air Compressor?

Eligible West Midlands businesses could access support towards qualifying energy-saving projects — and if compressed air is one of your biggest energy users, your compressor may be worth reviewing.

Tanair energy efficient PM VSD air compressor

If your compressor hasn't been reviewed for a few years, it may no longer be the most efficient machine for the way your site operates today.

Production changes, air demand changes and energy costs change. The compressor that was right for your business when it was installed may not necessarily be the right machine now.

For businesses looking at energy reduction, compressed air can therefore be a very worthwhile place to start.

THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

What is the Business Energy Advice Service?

The Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) helps eligible SMEs identify ways to reduce energy use, operating costs and carbon emissions.

Qualifying businesses can access a free energy assessment, with a report identifying suitable energy-efficiency measures.

Businesses may then have the opportunity to apply for match-funded support towards eligible recommendations within that report.

Up to 50% Match-funded support towards eligible energy-saving projects.
Up to £100,000 Potential grant support, subject to eligibility and approval.
Free Assessment Qualifying businesses can receive a business energy assessment.
And yes — compressed air can form part of an energy-saving project.

BEAS has already identified compressed-air equipment upgrades within energy assessments for West Midlands manufacturers. Whether a particular compressor project qualifies will depend on the individual assessment and current funding conditions.

WHY COMPRESSED AIR?

Your Compressor Could Be Using More Energy Than It Needs To

Older fixed-speed compressors generally operate at one motor speed. As site demand falls, they can continue consuming significant electricity while running unloaded.

If your air demand changes throughout the day, a correctly selected variable-speed compressor can adjust its output to follow the amount of compressed air actually required.

That doesn't mean VSD is automatically right for every application. It means the compressor should be selected around the site rather than simply replacing the old machine like-for-like.

Saving Energy in Tight Spaces

Ultron Technologies manufactures printed circuit boards and specialist electrical equipment, with compressed air playing an important role throughout production.

Their previous Champion KA4 compressor was operating at full capacity for extended periods and was no longer ideally suited to the demands of the site.

We replaced the existing machine with a Tanair TAN10-VSD/10 variable-speed compressor, allowing output to follow site demand more effectively.

The result was lower projected energy consumption, reduced annual running costs and a system better suited to the customer's production requirements.

The project also enabled the backup compressor to be relocated into a purpose-prepared external enclosure, freeing valuable production space.

The Projected Result

32.5%+ projected reduction in compressor energy consumption
£3,494.40 estimated previous annual compressor running cost
£2,358.45 projected annual running cost following the upgrade
PROJECTED ANNUAL SAVING £1,135.95

Don't Automatically Replace Like-for-Like

If you currently have an 11kW compressor, it doesn't automatically mean you need another 11kW compressor.

We look at your actual air demand, operating hours, working pressure, loaded and unloaded running and any changes to production before recommending a replacement.

The aim is to put the right compressor on the job — not simply the same compressor back in the room.

OUR ENERGY-EFFICIENT RANGE

THE NUMBERS MATTER

How Much Could Your Compressor Save?

This depends on what your current compressor is doing now.

In suitable applications, modern permanent-magnet VSD technology can offer significant savings compared with older fixed-speed equipment. But we would rather calculate that around your actual system than give every customer the same headline figure.

What We Look At

  • Existing compressor size
  • Annual running hours
  • Loaded and unloaded hours
  • Working pressure
  • Average air demand
  • Peak air demand
  • Production patterns
  • Electricity cost

What We Can Provide

  • Correct compressor sizing
  • Energy-use comparison
  • Estimated annual running cost
  • Projected annual saving
  • ROI calculation
  • Formal equipment quotation
  • Technical specification
  • Installation proposal

COMPLETE COMPRESSED AIR SUPPORT

More Than Just the Compressor

Improving efficiency sometimes means looking at the complete compressed-air system rather than one machine in isolation.

Equipment

  • PM-VSD air compressors
  • Air receivers
  • Refrigerated dryers
  • Compressed-air filtration
  • Condensate treatment

Engineering Support

  • System assessment
  • Compressor sizing
  • Pipework
  • Installation
  • Commissioning
  • Servicing & maintenance

The important question isn't just what a replacement compressor costs. It's what the existing compressor is already costing your business to keep running.

BEAS & COMPRESSED AIR

Frequently Asked Questions

Will BEAS definitely pay 50% towards a compressor?

No. BEAS offers up to 50% match funding towards eligible projects. Approval depends on the assessment, application, eligibility and available funding.

Does BEAS cover compressed-air equipment?

Compressed-air upgrades can be identified as an energy-saving measure, but any individual project must meet the programme's current eligibility and grant requirements.

Can Tanair apply for the grant for us?

The funding is administered independently. We can support the compressor side of the project with technical information, energy calculations, equipment selection and quotations.

Should we order the compressor before grant approval?

If you intend to apply for funding, check the programme requirements and obtain any necessary approval before committing to expenditure.

What if we don't qualify for the grant?

It can still be worth reviewing the system. Where an existing compressor is operating inefficiently, the energy savings may make an upgrade worthwhile even without grant support.

Could Your Compressor Be Costing More Than It Should?

Whether you're looking at BEAS funding or simply want to understand whether your current compressed-air system could operate more efficiently, speak to our team.

We can review the application, look at the actual air demand and help establish whether an upgrade makes commercial sense before you make a decision.
