A Birmingham Manufacturer with Diverse Capabilities

Arcadian Products is a Birmingham-based manufacturing business with capabilities extending well beyond its established work in garage door components and replacement parts.

Alongside garage-related products, the business undertakes machining, bespoke component manufacture and work for a range of engineering applications, including JCB-related parts.

Its production capability includes CNC machining, welding, power press work, fabrication and powder coating, allowing Arcadian to manufacture both established product lines and customer-specific components in-house.

That broader manufacturing capability makes dependable compressed air an important part of the production environment.

More Than 20 Years of Working Together

Arcadian Products has been a customer of Compressed Air Systems UK for more than 20 years, making this latest compressor installation another stage in a long-standing relationship between two Birmingham businesses.

Having supported the site's compressed air requirements over many years, this project was approached as part of the wider system rather than as a simple replacement machine.

The compressor, standby capacity, existing air treatment, pipework, electrical provision and future operating requirements were considered together so the new system could be specified around Arcadian's real manufacturing needs.

The Existing Compressed Air System

Before the upgrade, Arcadian's compressed air installation included a Hydrovane 43 alongside a larger Hydrovane 87, together with an existing refrigerated dryer and line filtration.

Initial discussions considered an 11 kW replacement compressor. Following a wider review of the site's requirements and future capacity, the project developed into a larger 22 kW variable-speed solution.

The aim was not simply to install a bigger compressor. The surrounding infrastructure also needed to be checked to ensure the new machine could be integrated correctly.

The System Review Considered

  • Required compressed air capacity
  • Existing compressor arrangement
  • Standby provision
  • Existing refrigerated dryer capacity
  • Existing line filtration
  • Pipework sizes and connection requirements
  • Electrical supply requirements
  • Future operating requirements

The Solution: Tanair TAN-S-22VSD

Following the review, Compressed Air Systems UK supplied and installed a Tanair TAN-S-22VSD 22 kW variable-speed screw compressor.

The machine provides up to 112 CFM at 10 Bar, giving Arcadian greater available compressed air capacity while using variable-speed technology to respond to changing demand.

The new Tanair replaced the smaller existing Hydrovane machine, while the larger Hydrovane 87 was retained within the system to provide standby capacity.

Retaining Suitable Existing Equipment

An important part of the project was determining whether Arcadian's existing refrigerated dryer and filtration also needed replacing.

Rather than automatically recommending a completely new compressed air system, the existing air-treatment equipment was reviewed for suitability alongside the operating profile of the new variable-speed compressor.

The existing dryer is capable of approximately 91 CFM at a 3°C pressure dew point. Taking its specification and the anticipated demand profile into account, the equipment was retained rather than replaced unnecessarily.

This allowed Arcadian to continue making use of suitable existing infrastructure while directing investment towards the compressor upgrade and associated installation work.

Delivery and Installation

The Tanair TAN-S-22VSD was delivered to Arcadian's Birmingham manufacturing facility and carefully moved into the existing compressor area.

The installation involved removal and disconnection work around the previous compressor, positioning of the new 22 kW machine and alterations required to integrate it with the existing compressed air system.

Preparing the Existing Plant Area

Moving from the previous installation to the larger 22 kW compressor required more than simply exchanging one machine for another.

The new compressor uses a larger compressed air outlet, so the pipework and connection arrangement had to be adapted to suit the new installation.

Electrical requirements were also reviewed as part of the project. The previous local 32 A provision was not sufficient for the new 22 kW machine, so the required electrical upgrade was identified before commissioning.

Why Variable Speed?

Manufacturing compressed air demand can change significantly throughout the working day. Different machines, tools and production activities can alter the amount of air the system requires.

A variable-speed compressor can adjust motor speed and output in response to that changing demand, rather than relying on a single fixed-output operating pattern.

For Arcadian, the 22 kW Tanair combines increased available capacity with the flexibility to respond to actual site demand.

The Completed Upgrade

The completed installation gives Arcadian Products a modern 22 kW variable-speed compressor while retaining useful parts of the existing compressed air infrastructure.

The project demonstrates the value of looking at the entire compressed air system rather than treating the compressor as an isolated piece of equipment.

  • 22 kW Tanair variable-speed screw compressor
  • Up to 112 CFM at 10 Bar
  • Demand-responsive compressor operation
  • Hydrovane 87 retained for standby resilience
  • Suitable existing dryer and filtration retained
  • Pipework adapted for the new compressor
  • Electrical requirements reviewed for the larger machine
  • Local installation, commissioning and ongoing support
