Air Receivers and Written Schemes of Examination
Air receivers form part of a pressure system and can fall within the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. HSE guidance identifies a compressed-air receiver and associated pipework as a typical system likely to require a Written Scheme of Examination where pressure in bar multiplied by receiver volume in litres is 250 bar-litres or more.
A competent person determines the exact Written Scheme scope and examination frequency. Routine compressor servicing does not replace statutory examination where it applies.

Dirty filters, restricted coolers, leaks and unnecessarily high pressure can all increase operating cost. Planned maintenance helps keep the system in its intended condition, but it should not be sold as a guaranteed percentage energy saving.
If energy use has changed significantly, review the actual load profile, leakage, pressure, compressor control and production demand rather than assuming the compressor itself is the only cause.
Plan for Critical-Air Contingency
Sites that depend heavily on compressed air should consider what happens during major servicing or an unexpected breakdown. Options can include backup capacity, a second compressor or temporary hire.
