Maintain the Whole Compressed-Air System

Reliable compressed air depends on more than the compressor. Dryers, filters, drains, receivers, pipework, controls and condensate equipment all influence pressure, air quality, energy use and reliability.

There is no universal annual service rule. Use the manufacturer's schedule, operating hours, equipment condition and working environment to set maintenance frequency.

Dryers, Filters and Drains

Air-treatment equipment needs its own maintenance. A compressor can run normally while a failed drain, fouled filter or dryer fault allows water downstream or creates excessive pressure drop.

  • Check dryer status, condenser condition and drains.
  • Monitor filter differential pressure where indicators are fitted.
  • Replace filter elements according to manufacturer requirements and condition.
  • Investigate water downstream rather than increasing compressor pressure.
  • Maintain oil-water separators and condensate equipment.

Air Receivers and Written Schemes of Examination

Air receivers form part of a pressure system and can fall within the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. HSE guidance identifies a compressed-air receiver and associated pipework as a typical system likely to require a Written Scheme of Examination where pressure in bar multiplied by receiver volume in litres is 250 bar-litres or more.

A competent person determines the exact Written Scheme scope and examination frequency. Routine compressor servicing does not replace statutory examination where it applies.

Keep the distinction clear: maintenance keeps equipment in serviceable condition; a Written Scheme examination is a separate statutory process where PSSR applies.

These checks should be carried out only by appropriately trained staff and without defeating guards or working on pressurised or energised equipment unsafely.

Energy Efficiency and Maintenance

Dirty filters, restricted coolers, leaks and unnecessarily high pressure can all increase operating cost. Planned maintenance helps keep the system in its intended condition, but it should not be sold as a guaranteed percentage energy saving.

If energy use has changed significantly, review the actual load profile, leakage, pressure, compressor control and production demand rather than assuming the compressor itself is the only cause.

Plan for Critical-Air Contingency

Sites that depend heavily on compressed air should consider what happens during major servicing or an unexpected breakdown. Options can include backup capacity, a second compressor or temporary hire.
