Small Air Compressors
Compare compact electric, quiet, portable, 110V and off-grid compressor options for inflation, air tools, maintenance, DIY and light workshop applications.
What Does “Small Compressor” Actually Mean?
Small compressors cover everything from 6 litre hobby machines to 50 litre workshop units and compact petrol compressors. The right machine is not simply the smallest one that fits the space — it needs enough airflow, pressure and duty capacity for the tools or process.

How Much CFM Do You Need?
230V, 110V, Petrol or Diesel?
Electric Compressors
- 230V suits many garages, workshops and home applications
- 110V is commonly chosen where site electrical requirements call for it
- No engine exhaust, making electric compressors the normal route for indoor use
Engine-Driven Compressors
- Useful where mains electricity is unavailable
- Petrol suits many lighter mobile applications
- Diesel is commonly used for heavier site and field duty
Quiet Compressor or Conventional Compressor?
Quiet / Silenced
A strong choice for garages, home workshops, dental/lab-style environments and locations where compressor noise is a major consideration.
Conventional Piston
Often gives strong value where noise is less critical and the compressor is being used intermittently for general workshop tasks.
When a Small Piston Compressor Is Not Enough
If the compressor will run for long periods every day, several tools operate together, or the process needs a more stable continuous air supply, a compact rotary screw compressor may be the better investment.
Small Air Compressor FAQs
What is the best small compressor for home use?
For inflation, airbrushing, cleaning and occasional DIY work, a compact quiet or oil-free compressor is usually the easiest option. Size it around the highest-CFM tool you actually intend to run.
What is the best small compressor for a workshop?
A 24L or 50L 230V piston compressor is a common starting point for general workshop use, but CFM demand is more important than tank size alone.
Can a small compressor run an impact wrench?
Some can run an impact wrench intermittently, but check the wrench's CFM requirement and operating pressure. The receiver may provide short bursts even when the pump cannot support continuous use.
Do I need an oil-free compressor?
Oil-free compressors reduce maintenance and eliminate compressor-pump oil from the compression chamber, but they are not automatically the best choice for every workshop. Lubricated pumps can be better suited to other operating patterns.
Can I use a petrol compressor indoors?
No engine-driven compressor should be operated in an enclosed occupied space. Petrol and diesel engines produce exhaust gases and require safe ventilation and exhaust dispersion.
Is 24/7 support available?
Compressed Air Systems UK provides a 24/7 emergency contact route for compressor breakdown situations. Normal sales, ordering and trade-counter enquiries remain subject to normal business opening arrangements.
