Build, Extend or Repair 3/8" Compressed Air Pipework

3/8" BSP fittings are a practical choice for threaded compressed-air connections where a compact pipe size is suitable for the required airflow. The range on this page includes fittings for straight connections, direction changes, branches, blanking-off points, isolation and transitions between different BSP sizes.

Galvanised fittings are especially useful for fixed workshop and industrial pipework because the zinc-coated finish offers a durable, corrosion-resistant surface for everyday compressed-air installations.

Building a New Run

Use sockets, unions, nipples, elbows and tees to create straight pipe runs, branches and changes of direction.

Adapting Pipe Sizes

Reducing bushes, reducing nipples and reducing sockets allow 3/8" BSP pipework to connect to larger or smaller threaded sizes.

Isolating or Closing Lines

Ball valves provide local isolation while plugs can be used to close unused threaded ports or branches.

Choosing the Correct 3/8" BSP Fitting

1. Confirm the Thread Size

Check that the connection you are matching is genuinely 3/8" BSP. BSP refers to the thread standard and does not equal the physical outside diameter of the thread.

2. Check Male or Female Threads

Confirm whether each side of the connection needs a male or female thread before selecting sockets, nipples, elbows, bushes or valves.

3. Identify the Job the Fitting Must Do

Choose a straight connector for joining pipework, an elbow for a direction change, a tee or cross for a branch, a reducer for changing size, or a valve for isolation.

4. Consider Airflow and Pressure Drop

The fitting size should suit the airflow demand of the system. Pipework that is too small can increase pressure drop, particularly over long runs or where several high-demand air tools operate together.

5. Seal Threaded Joints Correctly

BSP threaded compressed-air connections should be installed correctly using a suitable thread sealant or PTFE tape where appropriate to help create a secure, leak-resistant joint.

6. Check the Wider System

If you are extending an existing airline, consider pipe size, compressor capacity, operating pressure, drainage, isolation points and future expansion before finalising the layout.

3/8" BSP Air Line Fittings FAQs

What does 3/8" BSP mean?

3/8" BSP refers to a British Standard Pipe thread size. It describes the thread standard and nominal size rather than the measured outside diameter of the thread.

Can I connect 3/8" BSP pipework to another BSP size?

Yes. Reducing bushes, reducing nipples and reducing sockets can be used where the thread arrangement and sizes match the installation.

Do BSP threaded fittings need PTFE tape?

Threaded compressed-air joints normally require an appropriate sealing method. PTFE tape or a suitable thread sealant may be used depending on the fitting and installation requirements.

What is the difference between a socket and a nipple?

A socket generally provides female threads at both ends, while a nipple generally provides male threads for joining two female threaded components.

When should I use a union instead of a socket?

A union is useful where you may need to disconnect the joint later without rotating or dismantling a long section of pipework.

Is 3/8" BSP suitable for every compressed-air installation?

No. The correct pipe and fitting size depends on airflow, operating pressure, run length and acceptable pressure drop. Higher-demand installations may require larger bore pipework.

Can you help me identify an existing fitting?

Yes. Call 0121 753 3330 or contact our team with the fitting details and, where possible, a clear photograph of the existing connection.
