Safety Relief Valves for Compressors & Air Receivers

Safety valves provide overpressure protection by automatically relieving pressure when the valve reaches its specified set pressure.

The current range includes five safety-valve options, with 4.5 bar and 11 bar settings across selected 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4" BSP connections.

Correct selection is critical: set pressure, relieving capacity, connection specification and the equipment being protected all need to be considered. Thread size alone is not enough.

Safety valves are pressure-protection devices. Do not substitute a valve solely because the thread fits or because a higher set pressure would stop an existing valve lifting.

How to Select the Correct Safety Valve

Similar-looking valves are not automatically interchangeable. The complete specification must suit the equipment being protected.

Set Pressure

The set pressure must be appropriate for the maximum allowable pressure of the compressor, air receiver or protected system component.

Relieving Capacity

The safety valve must have sufficient discharge capacity for the pressure source and equipment it protects.

Connection

Confirm BSP size, male or female arrangement, thread form and installation requirements before ordering.

Application

Confirm whether the valve protects an air receiver, compressor stage, intercooler or another pressure-containing component.

Do not select a replacement safety valve using thread size alone. Set pressure, relieving capacity, connection and application must all be correct.
How It Works

What Does a Compressed-Air Safety Valve Do?

A safety valve is designed to open automatically when pressure reaches its set point, allowing compressed air to discharge and helping prevent pressure from continuing to rise beyond the intended limit.

When system pressure falls sufficiently, the valve is designed to reclose. It is a protective device rather than a normal pressure-control valve.

A safety valve should not routinely lift during normal compressor operation. Repeated discharge can indicate an overpressure, pressure-control or unloading fault that should be investigated.
Air Receivers

Safety Valves for Air Receivers

Air receivers require suitable protection against excessive pressure. The installed valve must be correctly specified for the receiver and have adequate relieving capacity for the connected pressure source.

A higher-pressure valve should not be fitted simply because it prevents an existing valve from lifting. The receiver rating and wider system requirements must remain the basis for selection.

  • Check for visible damage or corrosion
  • Inspect for persistent air leakage
  • Ensure pressure and identification markings remain legible
  • Keep the discharge outlet unobstructed
  • Do not alter or adjust the valve to increase its set pressure
  • Replace damaged or unsuitable valves with correctly specified components
Before removal or replacement: safely isolate the equipment and fully depressurise the compressor, receiver or system section.
