An essential component of any compressed air system is the air receiver, a compressed air tank. An air receiver is a storage unit for high-pressure air from the compressor. Its large volume helps stabilize pressure changes when the compressor cycles on and off or when the air demand shifts. The receiver’s extensive surface area dissipates heat as the air exiting the compressor is often warm or even hot. It is advisable to use the top of the receiver for the air exit since any moisture present in the air from the compressor will condense there.

Theoretically, it is possible to install an air compressor without a receiver; however, this could lead to increased operational costs. Without a receiver, the compressor may experience longer loading and unloading cycles and will have to work harder. It’s important to consider that these load/unload cycles are influenced by fluctuations in demand at your facility.

Every receiver tank should be equipped with a pressure gauge and a pressure relief valve, which should be set to vent excess air at 10% above the system’s operating pressure. Additionally, a drainage facility is necessary to remove condensed water from the system.
