Choose the Correct Hose Tail
Match the Hose Bore
The barb diameter should correspond closely with the hose internal diameter.
Check Thread Gender
Confirm whether the mating connection requires a male or female BSP thread.
Check BSP Size
Do not select by appearance alone; confirm the nominal BSP thread size.
Secure the Hose
Use a correctly sized O clip, Jubilee clip or suitable ferrule for the assembly.
Hose Tail Selection and Installation
Hose tails connect flexible hose to threaded equipment, valves, regulators and airline components. The complete assembly must suit the system pressure, airflow and operating environment.
- Confirm the hose internal diameter before ordering.
- Match the BSP thread size and male or female connection.
- Use suitable thread sealant on tapered threaded connections where required.
- Push the hose fully over the barb before securing it.
- Use the correct clip or clamp size without crushing the hose.
- Pressure-test the completed assembly and check for leaks.
- Replace damaged, hardened or split hose rather than reusing it.
Male and Female BSP Hose Tails
Male BSP hose tails screw into female-threaded ports. Female BSP hose tails connect to male-threaded components. Although the hose barb may be the same size, the thread gender must match the equipment.
The current range covers 1/4-inch male and female BSP fittings, plus larger 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch and 1-inch male BSP hose tails for greater hose bore and airflow.
Air Hose Fittings FAQs
How do I choose the correct barb size?
Match the barb diameter to the hose internal diameter. A barb that is too small may restrict airflow or fail to grip securely, while one that is too large may damage the hose.
What is the difference between male and female BSP?
A male BSP fitting has an external thread. A female BSP fitting has an internal thread. The hose tail must match the mating connection on the equipment.
Do I need a clip on the hose?
Yes, the hose should normally be secured with a correctly sized O clip, Jubilee clip or suitable ferrule appropriate to the hose, pressure and application.
Can these fittings be used for water?
Selected hose tails may be suitable for compressed air, water and compatible fluids, but material, pressure, temperature and application compatibility must be confirmed first.
Why is my hose connection leaking?
Common causes include the wrong barb size, damaged hose, a loose or unsuitable clip, incorrect thread sealing or a mismatched BSP connection.
