Reduce BSP Thread Sizes Cleanly

A reducing bush screws into a larger female BSP connection and provides a smaller female BSP outlet. It is a compact way to adapt valves, pipework, manifolds and other threaded components without adding unnecessary length.

Corrected wording: thread sizes on this page use proper quotation marks such as 1/2" and 3/8" — not malformed text such as and quot;.

How a Reducing Bush Works

Larger Male Thread Outside

The external male BSP thread fits into the larger female threaded connection in the pipework, valve or fitting.

Smaller Female Thread Inside

The internal BSP thread accepts the smaller male fitting or component, creating a compact step-down connection.

What to Check Before Ordering

Both BSP SizesIdentify the larger connection and the smaller connection you need to create.
Thread GenderReducing bushes are normally male on the outside and female on the inside.
System PressureConfirm that the fitting and the rest of the installation are suitable for the operating pressure.
Pipe BoreAvoid unnecessary restrictions on high-flow compressed-air lines.
Thread SealUse a suitable thread-sealing method for the application and install correctly.
ApplicationThe current galvanised range is used across compressed air and other compatible non-aggressive services.

Reducing Bush vs Reducing Nipple vs Reducing Socket

Reducing Bush

Male outside, female inside. Best where you want a compact reduction directly inside an existing female connection.

Reducing Nipple

Male threads on both ends. Used to join two female connections of different sizes.

Reducing Socket

Female threads on both ends. Used to join two male threaded components of different sizes.

Choose by the Existing Connections

The correct fitting type depends on the thread size and gender already present at both ends of the joint.

Reducing Bush FAQs

What is a BSP reducing bush?

It is a threaded fitting with a larger male BSP thread on the outside and a smaller female BSP thread inside, used to reduce one threaded connection size to another.

Can reducing bushes be used on compressed-air pipework?

Yes, provided the fitting material, thread specification and pressure rating are suitable for the compressed-air system.

How do I read a size such as 3/4" – 1/2"?

The first size is the larger outside male BSP thread. The second size is the smaller internal female BSP thread.

Should I choose a reducing bush by outside diameter?

No. BSP nominal sizes do not directly equal the measured outside diameter. Identify the actual BSP thread size or use a reliable BSP sizing guide.

Are prices shown ex VAT and inc VAT?

Yes. Product cards show both values for convenience.

Not Sure Which Reducing Bush You Need?

Tell us the existing BSP connection size and the size you need to reduce it to, or send a clear photo and measurements.
