Rotary Screw Compressor Oil & Lubricants

In an oil-injected rotary screw compressor, lubricant performs several jobs at the same time. It lubricates bearings and moving components, removes heat from the compression process, helps seal internal clearances and circulates through the compressor's oil-separation system.

The correct lubricant must be matched to the compressor make, model, existing oil and manufacturer service specification. Oils that share the same nominal viscosity are not automatically interchangeable.

In an oil-injected screw compressor, lubricant passes through the air end and oil circuit continuously while the machine runs.

Synthetic Compressor Oil

Synthetic lubricants may be specified for different service intervals, temperature stability or application requirements. Compatibility must still be confirmed.

Do not change from mineral to synthetic oil, or vice versa, without checking compatibility and the required changeover procedure.

4000-Hour & 8000-Hour Compressor Lubricants

Some products in this range carry 4000-hour or 8000-hour lubricant designations.

These should be treated as lubricant service categories rather than a guarantee that every compressor can operate for exactly that number of hours between oil changes.

Actual oil-change timing depends on the compressor manufacturer's maintenance schedule, lubricant used, running hours, temperature, contamination and operating conditions.

RotEnergyFood 46 is listed as a lubricant for rotary compressor applications where specific food-industry lubricant requirements apply. It is available in 5 litre, 18.5 litre and 207 litre pack sizes.

A food-industry lubricant does not by itself make the complete compressed-air system suitable for product contact. The required lubricant approval, air treatment and final air-quality specification must be confirmed for the application.

Rotar-EcoFluid Mineral Compressor Oil

Rotar-EcoFluid is a mineral 46 cSt lubricant range for compatible rotary screw compressors.

The expanded range includes 5 litre and 20 litre options in addition to the existing 3.8 litre product.

How to Choose the Correct Screw Compressor Oil

Compressor Make & Model

Use the complete compressor model as the starting point for lubricant selection.

Serial Number

Different production versions of the same model can have different service requirements.

Existing Lubricant

Identify the oil already fitted before topping up or changing lubricant type.

Viscosity Grade

Check the required viscosity, but do not use viscosity alone to determine compatibility.

Mineral or Synthetic

Confirm the required base-oil type and any approved lubricant reference.

Service Interval

Can Different Screw Compressor Oils Be Mixed?

Compressor oils should not be mixed unless compatibility has been confirmed.

Different lubricants may use different base oils and additive packages. An unsuitable mixture can affect viscosity, foaming, seals, separator performance and deposit formation.

If the lubricant already in the compressor cannot be identified, investigate before topping up. Changing oil type may require draining, flushing or replacement of service components depending on the machine and products involved.

Screw Compressor Oil Changes & Servicing
