Water Traps for Air Compressors

Water traps remove condensed moisture and airborne contamination before compressed air reaches tools, machinery or production equipment. Moisture control helps reduce corrosion, protect pneumatic components and support reliable system performance.

Choose the Correct Water Trap

Connection

Match the BSP Size

Confirm the existing pipe or equipment connection before ordering.

Airflow

Check System Capacity

Make sure the filter can pass the compressor airflow without excessive pressure drop.

Drain

Manual or Automatic

Manual drains suit routine checks; automatic drains help on busy or unattended systems.

Location

Install Near the Point of Use

Position the unit where moisture protection is most useful and servicing remains accessible.

How Water Traps Work

Moisture forms naturally when compressed air cools. A water trap separates liquid droplets and solid contamination from the airflow, collecting condensate in the filter bowl for manual or automatic discharge.

  • Helps remove bulk liquid water from compressed air lines.
  • Reduces dirt, dust and airborne particles.
  • Protects air tools, valves, cylinders and downstream machinery.
  • Supports cleaner air at workshop and point-of-use connections.
  • Helps reduce corrosion and avoidable maintenance.
A water trap does not replace a correctly sized refrigerated or adsorption dryer where a lower pressure dew point is required.

Installation and Maintenance Guidance

  • Install in the direction shown by the airflow arrow.
  • Keep the bowl upright so condensate can collect and drain correctly.
  • Provide enough clearance for bowl removal and element servicing.
  • Drain manual units regularly before the bowl fills.
  • Check automatic drains for free movement and correct discharge.
  • Always isolate and depressurise the system before maintenance.

Water Trap FAQs

What does a compressed air water trap remove?

It removes condensed water droplets, dirt and airborne contamination from the compressed air stream.

Should I choose a manual or automatic drain?

Manual drains suit systems checked regularly. Automatic drains are useful where condensate builds up frequently or the system runs unattended.

Can I choose a water trap by BSP size alone?

No. Check the airflow, operating pressure, drain type and application as well as the connection size.

Does a water trap replace an air dryer?

No. It removes liquid water but does not provide the controlled dew point of a refrigerated or adsorption dryer.

Where should a water trap be installed?

It is commonly installed near the point of use or upstream of equipment requiring additional moisture protection.

How often should the bowl be drained?

Drain frequency depends on humidity, operating hours and condensate volume. Check manual bowls regularly and verify automatic drains are working.
