Start Capacitors and Run Capacitors Explained

Run Capacitors

A run capacitor remains connected while the motor operates. It helps maintain the phase relationship required for smooth running, efficient current draw and suitable motor performance.

Start Capacitors

A start capacitor provides a higher capacitance for a short period while the motor accelerates. It is normally disconnected by a centrifugal switch, relay or electronic starting device once the motor reaches operating speed.

Never substitute a start capacitor for a run capacitor or a run capacitor for a start capacitor.

Common Signs of Capacitor Failure

  • The motor hums but does not start.
  • The motor starts slowly or struggles under pressure.
  • The overload trips repeatedly during starting.
  • The capacitor casing is swollen, split or leaking.
  • The motor starts only when manually assisted.
  • The capacitor fails an appropriate capacitance test.
Similar symptoms can also be caused by low voltage, a seized pump, unloading faults, tight bearings or motor damage. Diagnose the complete fault before replacing components.

Installation and Safety Guidance

  • Isolate the compressor from the electrical supply before inspection.
  • Capacitors can retain a dangerous charge after power is removed.
  • Record the original wiring before disconnecting terminals.
  • Fit the correct start or run type with the specified µF and voltage rating.
  • Secure the replacement so vibration cannot damage the case or terminals.
  • Electrical testing and replacement should be completed by a competent person.

How do I identify the correct compressor capacitor?

Are start and run capacitors interchangeable?

No. They are designed for different duties and operating periods.

Can I fit a capacitor with a different µF value?

Only where the motor manufacturer approves that value or range. An incorrect rating can affect starting, current draw and motor life.

Can I use a capacitor with a higher voltage rating?

A higher voltage rating may be acceptable where all other specifications match, but the replacement must still suit the motor and fit physically.

Why does my compressor hum but not start?

A failed start capacitor is one possibility, but low voltage, pump seizure, unloading faults and motor damage can create similar symptoms.

Are capacitors safe to handle after power is disconnected?

Not automatically. Capacitors can retain an electrical charge and should be handled and tested by a competent person.
