Replacement Electric Motors for Compressors and Machinery
A replacement motor must match the electrical supply, frame, shaft, speed, mounting and operating duty of the original equipment. The kW or HP rating alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.

Single-Phase and Three-Phase Motors
Single-Phase Motors
Single-phase motors are commonly used on smaller compressors and machinery connected to a 230 V supply. They may use start and run capacitors and normally draw a relatively high current while starting.
Three-Phase Motors
Three-phase motors are widely used across industrial compressors and production equipment. They provide efficient, robust operation but must be connected to a suitable three-phase supply and correctly configured control and overload equipment.
Motor Speed, Frame and Pulley Matching
Compressor pump speed depends on the motor speed and pulley ratio. Fitting a motor with a different speed, shaft or frame can change pump RPM, belt alignment and operating load.
- Match the original motor speed and pole count.
- Confirm the B3 foot-mounting dimensions.
- Check shaft diameter, length and keyway.
- Maintain the correct motor and pump pulley ratio.
- Align pulleys accurately and set the correct belt tension.
- Confirm the motor duty and protection rating suit the environment.
Installation and Electrical Safety
- Motor installation must be completed by a competent person.
- Confirm voltage, phase, frequency and wiring connection before energising.
- Set overload protection according to the motor data plate and control design.
- Check rotation before connecting or fully tensioning the driven equipment.
- Verify current draw, vibration and operating temperature during commissioning.
- Do not increase protective-device ratings to mask an unresolved starting fault.

Can I choose a replacement motor using only the kW rating?
No. Also match the phase, voltage, speed, frame, mounting, shaft, duty and starting arrangement.
What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase motors?
They use different electrical supplies and control arrangements. Single-phase motors often use capacitors, while three-phase motors require a suitable three-phase supply.
Why is the motor frame size important?
The frame determines mounting-hole centres, shaft height and standard shaft dimensions.
Can I fit a motor with a different speed?
Not without recalculating the pulley ratio and confirming the compressor pump or driven machine will remain within its permitted speed range.
Why does a compressor motor trip the overload?
Possible causes include low voltage, incorrect overload setting, excessive mechanical load, a failed capacitor, poor unloading, phase imbalance or motor damage.
