Choose the Correct Compressed Air Filter

Filter selection should be based on actual compressor airflow, working pressure, connection size, the contaminant that needs removing and the final air quality required.

As a practical starting point, allow spare filtration capacity above the compressor's delivered airflow. Our usual cross-sell guide is compressor CFM ÷ 0.8, giving roughly 20% spare capacity before pressure and site conditions are checked.

How to Size a Compressed Air Filter

Actual Delivered Airflow

Size from the compressor's delivered CFM rather than motor kW or theoretical displacement.

Working Pressure

Confirm the filter is suitable for the system pressure and use the correct performance data where pressure affects rated flow.

Connection Size

The BSP connection must suit the pipework, but thread size alone does not confirm sufficient flow capacity.

Required Air Quality

Select the filtration grade or staged combination according to the contamination and downstream process.

Avoid undersizing. An undersized or blocked filter increases pressure drop, which can increase compressor energy use and reduce available pressure at the point of use.

What Do the Different Filter Grades Do?

3 Micron Pre-Filter

Used as an initial stage for larger particles and bulk contamination before finer treatment.

1 Micron General Filter

General compressed-air filtration for workshops, garages, pneumatic machinery and many industrial applications.

0.01 Micron Fine Filter

Fine coalescing filtration for applications requiring reduced microscopic particulate and aerosol contamination.

High-Efficiency Oil Removal

Final-stage treatment for applications requiring extremely low oil carryover. Correct upstream treatment remains essential.

Staged Treatment

Do I Need More Than One Filter?

Often, yes. Compressed-air treatment commonly uses more than one filtration stage so each element deals with the type and quantity of contamination it is designed to remove.

  • Pre-filtration removes larger contamination before finer filters
  • General-purpose filtration improves routine workshop air quality
  • Fine coalescing stages reduce smaller particles and oil aerosols
  • Activated-carbon treatment can be added where oil-vapour reduction is required
  • The exact sequence depends on compressor type, dryer technology and required final air quality

High Efficiency Filter Housing Construction

The current range uses high-grade die-cast aluminium housings with internal and external protective treatment and an epoxy-baked compressed-air-blue finish.

Pressure Drop

Why Low Pressure Drop Matters

Every restriction in a compressed-air system costs pressure. As filters become undersized or contaminated, the compressor may need to produce a higher discharge pressure to maintain the required pressure downstream.

The existing high-efficiency range uses pleated filter media to increase filtration surface area and help reduce pressure drop while maintaining filtration performance.

Maintenance

Filter Inspection & Element Replacement

  • Inspect filters regularly for pressure drop and condensate drainage
  • Replace internal filter elements at the required maintenance interval
  • Check automatic drains are operating correctly
  • Investigate abnormal pressure loss across the housing
  • Keep a record of installed housing and element references
  • Safely isolate and fully depressurise the system before servicing

What airflow range is available?

The current complete-filter range covers approximately 20 to 1700 CFM, depending on housing, connection and filtration grade.

What is the difference between GP, OR and AC?

GP is general-purpose filtration, OR is oil-removing filtration and AC is activated-carbon treatment. They perform different roles within a staged treatment system.

Can I choose a filter just from the BSP thread?

No. The filter must also have sufficient airflow capacity, the correct pressure rating and the required filtration grade.

Why allow spare filter capacity?

Extra capacity can help reduce pressure drop, cope with short demand peaks and provide room for future system growth.

Are replacement elements included on this page?

No. This page is specifically for complete filter housings and assemblies. Replacement elements are kept in the separate filter-element range.

How often should the filter element be changed?

Replacement depends on operating hours, contamination, pressure drop and the product's maintenance guidance. Filters should be inspected regularly and serviced before restriction affects performance.
