Petrol Engines
Honda GX petrol engines and compatible recoil starter assemblies for air compressors, pumps, generators, construction equipment and industrial machinery.
Honda GX Petrol Engines & Recoil Starter Parts
The Honda GX range is widely used across compressors, pumps, generators and other engine-driven equipment where a reliable horizontal-shaft petrol engine is required.
When replacing an existing engine, match more than horsepower. Shaft size, shaft length, keyway, mounting pattern, starting method, rotation and the requirements of the driven equipment all need to be confirmed before ordering.

View Engine →How to Choose the Correct Petrol Engine
A replacement engine should be matched to the complete machine specification rather than selected on horsepower alone.
Power Output
Match the original engine rating and confirm the driven equipment is designed for that level of power.
Shaft Size & Length
Check shaft diameter, usable shaft length, keyway dimensions and threaded-end arrangement.
Starting Method
Confirm whether the machine requires recoil start or electric start and whether suitable battery and wiring provisions exist.
Mounting Arrangement
Confirm base dimensions, mounting-hole pattern, clearance and crankshaft position.
Pulley or Coupling
Match the shaft to the existing pulley, coupling or clutch and verify alignment before operation.
Engine Model
Where possible, replace like-for-like using the complete original engine model rather than selecting a similar GX engine by appearance.
Recoil Start or Electric Start?
Recoil Start
Recoil-start engines use a manual pull starter and are commonly used where simple, independent starting is required.
Electric Start
Electric-start engines use a starter motor and can be more convenient on larger equipment or machines that are started frequently.
Honda GX Recoil Starter Assemblies
Recoil starter assemblies provide the manual starting mechanism on compatible Honda GX engines. They should be selected by engine family and original starter reference wherever possible.
The range currently includes one replacement starter for compatible GX110–GX200 engines and another for compatible GX240–GX270 engines.
Petrol Engine Installation & Maintenance
- Confirm the complete engine model before installation
- Check shaft size, keyway and coupling or pulley compatibility
- Confirm mounting-hole positions and available clearance
- Align pulleys, couplings or clutches correctly
- Use the correct engine oil specification and level
- Keep cooling-air passages and ventilation areas clear
- Inspect air filters, spark plugs and fuel-system components regularly
- Maintain recoil or electric-start components as required
- Follow Honda's applicable service and maintenance requirements
Petrol Engine Safety
Petrol engines produce combustion exhaust gases including carbon monoxide. They must only be operated in conditions suitable for engine-driven equipment and in accordance with the engine manufacturer's instructions.

Petrol Engine FAQs
How do I identify the correct replacement petrol engine?
Match the engine model, power output, shaft diameter and length, keyway, starting method and mounting arrangement.
Can I fit a more powerful petrol engine?
Not without checking the driven equipment, pulley or coupling, operating speed, guarding and the maximum permitted engine input.
What is the difference between recoil and electric start?
Recoil start uses a manual pull starter. Electric start uses a starter motor and normally requires a compatible battery and wiring system.
Can I choose a Honda GX engine using horsepower alone?
No. Shaft dimensions, mounting pattern, starting method and the requirements of the driven equipment must also be checked.
How do I choose the correct recoil starter assembly?
Match the Honda GX engine family and the original recoil starter reference wherever possible.
Can petrol engines be used indoors?
Petrol engines produce dangerous combustion exhaust gases and must not be operated in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas.
Can Compressed Air Systems UK help identify the correct engine?
Yes. Provide the engine model, equipment model, shaft measurements, starting method and clear photographs and our team can help narrow down the correct option.
Not Sure Which Honda GX Engine You Need?
