Petrol is often the practical choice when you need compressed air away from mains power. Electric is usually the better fit for fixed workshops and production sites. The right choice still depends on airflow, pressure, duty, electrical supply, mobility and operating environment.

The Short Answer

Choose Petrol When…

  • There is no suitable mains electrical supply.
  • The compressor needs to move between remote jobs.
  • Site work is outdoors or in a suitable well-ventilated location.
  • Fuel independence is more useful than fixed-site efficiency.

Choose Electric When…

  • The compressor will stay in a workshop or plant room.
  • A suitable 110V, 230V or 400/415V supply is available.
  • No combustion exhaust is desirable at the point of use.
  • Higher annual operating hours make fuel-engine servicing unattractive.
Neither power source fixes incorrect sizing. A petrol or electric compressor still needs enough delivered airflow at the pressure required by the tools or process.

When Petrol Is the Better Choice

Petrol compressors are valuable because they make compressed air independent of a mains electrical supply. That matters on remote sites, farms, mobile-service jobs and early-stage construction work.

Carbon Monoxide Changes the Indoor Comparison

A petrol compressor should not be treated as an indoor alternative to an electric compressor. Petrol-engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a colourless and poisonous gas.

HSE warning: petrol-powered equipment used indoors or in enclosed spaces can create significant carbon monoxide levels within minutes. HSE advises that petrol-powered equipment should not be used indoors or in enclosed spaces unless ventilation needs have been fully assessed, with expert advice and mechanical extraction normally required.

For a normal fixed workshop compressor installation, an appropriately specified electric machine avoids combustion exhaust at source.

Running Cost: Compare the Real Job

It is too simplistic to say electric is always cheaper or petrol is always more economical remotely. Total cost depends on how the compressor is actually used.

Do Not Use Generic Tool-CFM Figures

Tool consumption varies too much for a generic 8–12 CFM at 90–120 PSI rule to be a safe way to select a petrol compressor.

  • Use the CFM or l/min stated by the manufacturer of the exact tool.
  • Use the pressure specified for that tool or process.
  • Add equipment that can realistically operate at the same time.
  • Consider whether use is intermittent or sustained.
  • Allow sensible spare capacity based on leakage, uncertainty and future demand rather than an arbitrary universal percentage.

Tank Size Is Not a Portability Rule

There is no universal receiver-size or weight band that defines a portable petrol compressor. Portability depends on the complete machine design, wheels or handles, site conditions and intended use.

Receiver size should be chosen around demand pattern and compressor control, while portability depends on the complete machine's size, frame, wheels, lifting points, vehicle access and the terrain where it will be moved.

Remember: a larger receiver stores more compressed air but does not increase the compressor pump's continuous CFM.

Maintenance Differences

Petrol

Alongside normal compressor-pump maintenance, a petrol machine has an engine that may need oil changes, engine air-filter maintenance, spark-plug checks, fuel-system care and starting-system service according to the exact engine manual.

Electric

There is no petrol engine, but the compressor still requires maintenance. Oil-lubricated pumps or screw compressors, filters, belts where fitted, coolers, drains and air-treatment equipment still need servicing.

What About a Generator and Electric Compressor?

A generator can make an electric compressor portable, but the combination must be engineered properly. Compressor motors can have substantial starting current, and VSD or electronically controlled equipment can have additional supply-quality requirements.

  • Check the compressor manufacturer's electrical input and starting requirements.
  • Check generator continuous and transient capacity.
  • Use suitable protective devices, earthing and distribution arrangements.
  • Avoid long or undersized extension leads that cause excessive voltage drop.
  • Remember the generator itself produces exhaust if it has a combustion engine.

Environmental Claims Need Context

Electric compressors have no combustion exhaust at the point of use, while petrol machines burn fuel locally and produce exhaust emissions. That does not automatically establish the full lifecycle carbon footprint of either option.

If carbon reporting matters, compare actual electricity consumption and its supply source against measured petrol consumption rather than using a blanket “greenest” claim.
