Filter Regulators for Compressed Air Systems
Filter regulators combine compressed air filtration and pressure regulation in one unit. The filter stage removes moisture and particulate contamination, while the regulator maintains a controlled downstream pressure for tools, valves, cylinders and production equipment.
Choose the Correct Filter Regulator
Match the Thread Size
Confirm BSP or PT thread type and the required inlet and outlet size.
Check Flow Capacity
An undersized unit can create pressure drop when the tool or machine operates.
Manual or Automatic
Choose a drain arrangement that suits the condensate load and inspection routine.
Confirm the Outlet Range
Set the downstream pressure according to the connected equipment requirement.
How a Filter Regulator Works
Compressed air first passes through the filter bowl, where moisture and larger particles are separated from the airflow. It then passes through the regulator mechanism, which reduces and stabilises the outlet pressure at the selected setting.
- Combines filtration and pressure control in one compact assembly.
- Helps protect valves, cylinders, air tools and pneumatic machinery.
- Supports consistent tool speed and process performance.
- Reduces the number of separate components required at the point of use.
- Provides straightforward adjustment and routine servicing.
Installation and Maintenance Guidance
- Install the unit in the direction shown by the airflow arrow.
- Keep the filter bowl upright so condensate can collect and drain correctly.
- Set the outlet pressure while air is flowing through the system.
- Drain manual bowls regularly and check automatic drains for correct operation.
- Inspect and replace the filter element in line with service requirements.
- Isolate and depressurise the system before bowl removal or maintenance.
Filter Regulator FAQs
What does a filter regulator do?
It removes moisture and particulate contamination while reducing the air supply to a controlled downstream pressure.
Can I choose a filter regulator by thread size alone?
No. Also check airflow, pressure range, drain type, micron rating and the connected equipment.
What is the difference between manual and automatic drain models?
A manual drain must be opened during routine checks. An automatic drain discharges collected condensate without relying on manual emptying.
Does a filter regulator replace an air dryer?
No. It removes bulk moisture and particles but does not provide the controlled pressure dew point of a refrigerated or adsorption dryer.
Why does outlet pressure fall during tool use?
The unit, hose, fittings or pipework may be undersized or restricted for the required airflow.
How often should the filter element be replaced?
Follow the manufacturer guidance and inspect pressure drop, contamination and operating hours. Replace the element before restriction affects performance.
