Producing compressed air is only one part of creating a dependable system. The air must also be stored, dried, filtered and controlled correctly before it reaches pneumatic tools, machinery or production equipment.

Why Is Compressed Air Treatment Important?
Atmospheric air naturally contains moisture, dust and other airborne contamination. When this air is compressed, those contaminants become concentrated and can pass into the air receiver, distribution pipework and downstream equipment.
Oil-lubricated compressors may also introduce small quantities of oil aerosol into the compressed air supply. Without suitable storage, drying and filtration, moisture and contamination can contribute to:
- Internal corrosion of air receivers and compressed air pipework
- Water, oil and particle contamination at points of use
- Premature wear of pneumatic tools, valves and production equipment
- Damage to products, paint finishes and sensitive manufacturing processes

A Complete Compressed Air Treatment System
The correct arrangement will vary between installations, but a typical system may include an air receiver, condensate drain, pre-filter, compressed air dryer, post-filtration, pressure regulation and an oil-water separator. Correctly matching these components helps reduce pressure loss and prevents individual treatment products from becoming restrictive or overloaded.
Air Receivers and Compressed Air Storage
An air receiver provides stored compressed air and helps balance fluctuations between compressor output and site demand. Correctly sized storage can support short periods of peak demand, stabilise system pressure and reduce excessive compressor loading and unloading.
Air receivers also provide an initial cooling and separation point. As the compressed air cools, some of its moisture condenses inside the receiver before the air reaches downstream dryers and filters.
This condensate must be removed regularly using a suitable manual, automatic or zero-loss drain. Allowing water to remain inside the receiver can reduce available storage capacity and contribute to internal corrosion.
Air Dryers and Moisture Control
Moisture is one of the most common causes of compressed air system problems. As compressed air cools inside the receiver and distribution pipework, water vapour condenses into liquid water.
Our range of compressed air dryers helps lower the pressure dew point of the air, reducing the risk of water reaching pneumatic tools, machinery and production processes.
Refrigerated air dryers are suitable for the majority of general workshop, garage and industrial applications. Specialist applications, external pipework or processes requiring extremely dry air may need an adsorption dryer or additional air treatment.
Water traps can provide additional local moisture separation, but they should not normally be treated as a replacement for a correctly sized air dryer where consistent moisture control is required.
Compressed Air Filtration
Drying removes moisture, but effective compressed air treatment also requires suitable filtration. High-efficiency filters and coalescing filters help remove solid particles, oil aerosols and fine liquid contamination from the compressed air supply.
Different filter grades perform different functions. A typical installation may include:
- General-purpose filtration for larger particles and bulk liquid contamination
- Coalescing filtration for fine oil aerosols and moisture droplets
- Fine or high-efficiency filtration for sensitive downstream applications
- Replacement filter elements for planned servicing and routine maintenance
Filters must be selected for the system airflow, operating pressure and required air quality. An undersized or blocked filter element can create excessive pressure drop, reducing the air available to equipment and causing the compressor to operate at a higher pressure than necessary.
Pressure Control and Point-of-Use Air Preparation
Not every tool or process requires the full pressure produced by the compressor. Air regulators allow downstream pressure to be adjusted to suit the application, helping protect equipment and reduce unnecessary compressed air consumption.
Filter regulators combine pressure regulation with particle and moisture separation in a compact unit, making them suitable for local air preparation and point-of-use installations.
Where pneumatic equipment requires a controlled oil supply, an air line lubricator can introduce a measured quantity of lubricant into the air stream.
Lubricators should only be installed where the connected equipment specifically requires lubrication. Many modern tools and processes require dry, oil-free air downstream and should not be supplied through a lubricator.
Condensate Drains and Oil-Water Separation
Moisture removed by air receivers, filters and dryers becomes condensate. This condensate may contain compressor oil and other contamination and must be managed correctly to prevent water build-up, corrosion and reduced system capacity.

A poorly maintained or incorrectly selected drain can allow water to remain inside the receiver or filter housing. Timed drains can also waste significant quantities of compressed air when set to open more frequently or for longer than required.
How to Select the Correct Air Treatment Equipment
Air treatment equipment should be selected using the compressor's actual delivered airflow and the site's operating conditions rather than compressor motor size alone.
Important sizing and selection considerations include:
- The compressor's delivered airflow in CFM or m³/min
- The normal and maximum system operating pressure
- The compressed air inlet temperature
- The ambient temperature surrounding the equipment
- The required pressure dew point and compressed air quality
- The type of tools, machinery or process being supplied
- The expected pressure drop across dryers, filters and regulators
- The size and layout of the compressed air distribution system
- Current air demand and any planned future expansion
Dryer and filter capacities are normally stated at defined reference conditions. High compressed air inlet temperatures, elevated ambient temperatures or lower operating pressures can reduce effective capacity. A suitable sizing margin should therefore be allowed.
Installation, Servicing and Replacement Equipment
Compressed air treatment equipment requires routine inspection and maintenance. Filter elements should be replaced at the manufacturer's recommended intervals, drains should be checked for correct operation and refrigerated dryer condensers must be kept clean and adequately ventilated.
Neglected filters and drains can increase pressure drop, waste energy and allow moisture or contamination to pass downstream. Planned servicing helps maintain compressed air quality and identify developing problems before they result in equipment failure or production downtime.
